Grading

Assignments

Assignments will, typically, encompass the topics covered in the lectures. Here are the key expectations for your assignment submissions:

  • The assignments need to be uploaded on Gradescope, and your answers need to be labelled
  • Your assignment solutions need to be uploaded as a single PDF document
  • Start every new problem on a fresh page and make sure all mathematical expressions are clearly written
  • You will get partial credit if your main ideas are well-organized and communicated clearly
Note
  • You final score for each assignment will be based on a predeterminded, but randomly selected subset of the problems you have to turn in.

  • Your lowest assignment score will be dropped for the final grades.

Assignments are always due at 11:59 PM

As with all electronic assignment submissions, there is no “on time”. If you’re not early, you’re late. So, make sure you plan ahead! Requests for late submissions will not be entertained.

Exams

Exams will, essentially, be longer versions of assignments testing your learning on all topics covered until that point. The midterm exam will be held during the lectures

Grading

Your final grade will be based on the best of the following two schemes:

Scheme 1

Homework 35%
In-class quiz 5%
Midterm 30%
Final Exam 30%

Scheme 2

Homework 35%
In-class quiz 5%
Final Exam 60%
No make-up exams will be given

\[ \text{final score } = \max(\text{scheme 1}, \text{scheme 2}) \]

In other words,

  • If you miss the midterm, your final score will be based on Scheme 2.
  • If you write midterm, then it will be \(\max(\text{scheme 1}, \text{scheme 2})\).

Grading Scheme

Your final grade will be assigned as follows:

A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D F
100-97 96-93 92-90 89-87 86-83 82-80 79-77 76-73 72-70 69-60 59-0
